Former Emperor Akihito

According to the Constitution of Japan, His Imperial Highness the Emperor is "symbol of the State and of the unity of the people" and derives his position from "the will of the people with whom resides sovereign power."

The imperial family has centuries-old traditions. It is the oldest unbroken dynasty in the world. Former H.I.H. Emperor Akihito was crowned in 1989. His Imperial Highness the emperor and his wife H.I.H. Empress Michiko have three children and live in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

The children are; His Imperial Highness Emperor Naruhito, born 23 February 1960, His Imperial Highness Prince Akishino(Fumihito), born 30 November 1965 and Her Imperial Highness Princess Sayako, born 18 April 1969.
